Gallatin runs its own electric department, its own water and gas utility, and a trash service you have to sign up for. Knowing that before move-in day saves you a few phone calls and at least one missed pickup. This guide walks through each setup step for the Sumner County seat, with every fee and address checked on November 4, 2026.

The Gallatin Department of Electricity (GDE) is at 135 Jones Street, 615-452-5152, open weekdays 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Bring two forms of ID: one government-issued, such as a Social Security card or birth certificate, and one with a photo, such as a driver license. Your deposit depends on a credit check: none for a green rating, $150 for yellow, or $300 for red. Setting the meter costs $35 for next-day service, $70 for same-day before 3 p.m., or $100 for same-day after 3 p.m., per GDE's residential service page. Some homes outside the city get power from a different provider, so check the seller's last bill.
Gallatin Public Utilities (GPU), at 239 Hancock Street, handles water, sewer, and natural gas inside the city. A few Gallatin addresses get water from White House Utility District instead, and the city's trash setup page covers both cases. Call a few days before closing.

City trash pickup in Gallatin is optional, and it doesn't start on its own. Service costs $21 per container per month, billed on your Gallatin or White House utility bill, a rate in place since July 1, 2025. First get a can: buy one for $65 at Gallatin Public Utilities, with a 10-year warranty and delivery usually within 24 hours, or buy a compatible can at a hardware store. Then fill out the online trash service application using the same name as your utility bill. Pickup runs Monday through Thursday. Set the can at the curb by 7 a.m. and bring it back within 24 hours. You get two free courtesy dumps a year for a missed pickup. Questions go to Public Works at 615-452-2147.
Gallatin doesn't offer curbside recycling. The city recycling center at 641 Long Hollow Pike serves Gallatin residents. For electronics, call the Sumner County Resource Authority at 615-452-1114.
Tennessee gives new residents 30 days to get a Tennessee license, and you surrender your out-of-state license at a full-service driver services center. Bring two proofs of residency. If you fly, a REAL ID has been required at airport checkpoints since May 7, 2025.
For tags, visit the Sumner County Clerk in the Gallatin Administration Building, 355 N. Belvedere Drive, Room 111, behind the Gallatin Walmart. Hours are weekdays 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and the phone is 615-452-4063. Bring your Tennessee license showing your Sumner County address, your current out-of-state registration, and your out-of-state title. If a lender holds the title, bring the lienholder's full name and address. The Clerk's site lists the title and first-year plate at $94 on its moving-to-Tennessee page and $95 on its title fee page, so plan on about $95. Card payments add 2.25% plus 25 cents, and leased cars need a power of attorney from the leasing company. Starting January 1, 2027, first-time registrations also require proof of citizenship or lawful presence under T.C.A. 55-4-144.
Sumner County Schools serves Gallatin and assigns schools by address, so run any address through the district's Find My School Zone tool before you sign a contract. Register online through the district's Register My Child link. You'll need two proofs of residency in the parent's name showing the new address, such as a signed lease, a mortgage statement plus utility bills, or current electric, water, or gas bills. Cell phone bills and bank statements don't count. Families who don't own or lease the home may need a notarized residency affidavit. Interested in Merrol Hyde Magnet School in Hendersonville? Hours are Tuesday and Thursday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday and Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It's closed Sunday and Monday. Ask at the desk what to bring for a new card.

The 2026 county rate is $1.421 per $100 of assessed value, and the City of Gallatin adds $0.5295, per the Assessor's rate table and the city's property tax page. On a $400,000 home inside the city, that works out to about $1,951 a year, or about $1,421 outside city limits. City taxes are due by the last day of February and start earning interest March 1. Plug your numbers into our mortgage calculator to see the full monthly payment.
Electric, water and gas, and trash each have their own sign-up, and the electric deposit can reach $300. Add tag fees, and the first month costs more than many buyers expect. Our affordability calculator helps you plan for it.
Recycling means a trip to the Long Hollow Pike center or hiring a private service. If curbside recycling matters to you, budget for it.
