Moving to Murfreesboro, TN: Relocation Guide (2026)
Chapters

More than 171,000 people call Murfreesboro home, by the U.S. Census Bureau's July 2025 estimate, and you're about to be one of them. Welcome to the Rutherford County seat, about 30 miles southeast of downtown Nashville on I-24! Now comes the part nobody posts about: turning on the power, figuring out who handles your water, enrolling the kids, and swapping your plates. This guide walks through it step by step.

Still deciding? Read our pros and cons of living in Murfreesboro first. For the whole metro, our Greater Nashville relocation guide lays out every county. And when you're ready to look, here are the homes for sale in Murfreesboro today.

Here's what we'll cover:

Your Murfreesboro Move at a Glance

  • County: Rutherford County. Murfreesboro is the county seat.
  • Population: an estimated 171,178 on July 1, 2025, up from 152,769 at the 2020 Census (U.S. Census Bureau).
  • Electric: Middle Tennessee Electric (MTE).
  • Water and sewer: Murfreesboro Water Resources or Consolidated Utility District, depending on your address.
  • Natural gas: Atmos Energy.
  • Schools: Murfreesboro City Schools (pre-K to 6) inside the city, and Rutherford County Schools.
  • Property taxes: city and county bills, both due by February 28.

Your First 30 Days: A Moving Checklist

  1. Find out who provides your water before you call anybody else. In Murfreesboro, it depends on the address.
  2. Start electric with MTE and gas with Atmos Energy a week or two before move-in.
  3. Look up your school zone and register the kids online.
  4. Get your Tennessee driver license. The state gives new residents 30 days.
  5. Title and register your car with the Rutherford County Clerk.
  6. Put the property tax due date on your calendar if you bought a home.
  7. Register to vote with the Rutherford County Election Commission once you have your new license.

Setting Up Utilities in Murfreesboro

Electric

Middle Tennessee Electric, a member-owned co-op, serves Murfreesboro. You can start service online through MTE's Start, Stop, or Move page or by phone at 877-777-9020. MTE lists a $40 connection fee and a $5 membership fee, and it runs a soft credit check when you apply.

Water and Sewer

This is the step that confuses newcomers. Parts of town are served by the city's Murfreesboro Water Resources Department (MWRD), and other parts by Consolidated Utility District (CUD).

  • MWRD: 316 Robert Rose Drive, 615-890-0862. The city lists a $40 non-refundable fee and asks for a photo ID. Not sure if you're in its area? The department's service-area line is 615-848-3209.
  • CUD: 615-893-7225. CUD lists a $50 activation fee and asks for ID, your Social Security number, and a lease or proof of ownership.

Gas, Trash, and Internet

Atmos Energy provides natural gas, and the City lists Comcast as a cable provider. Inside city limits, the City's FY2027 budget set the residential trash fee at $15.50 per can each month. Outside the city, ask your agent or HOA how trash works for that street before you close.

Enrolling in School

Murfreesboro has two public school districts, and zoning follows the exact address.

  • Murfreesboro City Schools serves pre-K through 6th grade, mostly inside city limits. New students can register online any time during the year. For 2026 to 2027, registration opened April 7, 2026, and school started August 5. You'll need proof of age, a Tennessee immunization certificate, a physical from the past 12 months, a parent photo ID, and one proof of residency from the prior month, such as a water, electric, or garbage bill, a mortgage statement, or a recent closing statement with proof of utility service. MCS says enrollment can take 1 to 3 business days, and its online lookup shows your zoned school.
  • Rutherford County Schools serves grades 7 to 12 for city students and every grade for homes outside the city. NCES counted 52,127 students in 55 schools in 2024 to 2025. RCS has an online zone finder where you enter the address and grade.

Always verify school zoning by address with the district before you buy. We never promise a school assignment.

Driver License, Title, and Registration

Tennessee requires new residents to get a Tennessee driver license within 30 days. The full-service Murfreesboro Driver Services Center is at 1035 Samsonite Boulevard, open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. (615-898-8036). Check the state's Driver Services document list before you go so you bring the right proof of identity and Tennessee residency.

For your car, head to the Rutherford County Clerk. The Murfreesboro office is at 319 N. Maple Street, Suite 121 (615-898-7800), with other offices on Blaze Drive in Blackman and on I Street in Smyrna. The Clerk lists $99.50 for a new-to-Tennessee title and registration ($101.50 if the car is leased). Bring your out-of-state title, or your lienholder's information if you have a loan, plus ID and proof of residency. The Clerk doesn't accept photos of documents on your phone, so bring paper. Hours are Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Your Property Tax Calendar

Homeowners inside city limits get two bills: one from the City of Murfreesboro and one from the Rutherford County Trustee. Here's how the most recent cycle worked, per the City's finance department (Murfreesboro.com, 2025):

  • City bills for 2025 taxes were mailed September 22, 2025, and online payment opened October 1.
  • A change in city code moved the city due date to match the county's: February 28, 2026.
  • Unpaid city taxes start earning interest March 1 at 1.5% a month.

The 2026 rates are $0.7529 for the city and $1.4885 for the county per $100 of assessed value, and homes are assessed at 25% of value. On a $428,000 home, that's roughly $2,400 a year in total. Bought mid-year? Check your closing statement to see who pays which bill. You can pay city taxes online, by mail, or at City Hall, 111 W. Vine Street.

Lakes, Mountains, and Getting Around

These are rough drive times from the downtown square. They depend on traffic, especially on I-24 at rush hour, so build in a cushion.

  • Nissan's Smyrna plant: about 12 miles, 20 to 25 minutes.
  • J. Percy Priest Lake (Fall Creek Recreation Area): about 17 miles, 25 to 35 minutes.
  • Nashville International Airport (BNA): about 29 miles, 35 to 50 minutes.
  • Downtown Nashville: about 33 miles, 45 to 60 minutes.
  • Cool Springs in Franklin: about 33 miles, 45 to 60 minutes.
  • Vanderbilt University Medical Center: about 34 miles, 45 to 65 minutes.
  • Tims Ford State Park: about 55 miles, 75 to 90 minutes.
  • Chattanooga and the mountains: about 101 miles, 1 hour 50 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes.

Cost of Living and the Housing Market

Redfin put Murfreesboro's median sale price at about $428,000 for the three months ending September 2026. Census estimates put the median owner-occupied home value at $402,100 (ACS 2020 to 2024). Supply is healthy for a city this size: our Murfreesboro search page showed 1,535 homes for sale of all types on the morning of October 25, 2026.

Neighborhoods and Areas to Know

Murfreesboro is big, so it helps to think in areas. Near the downtown square you'll find older homes on tree-lined streets, some on the National Register of Historic Places. The Blackman area on the west side has plenty of newer subdivisions close to I-24 and Medical Center Parkway. The east and south sides mix established neighborhoods with brand-new communities. What to Know Before You Buy

  • Check the water provider and school zone for each house. Two homes a mile apart can have different answers.
  • Look at the flood map. The Stones River forks run through the area, so check flood zones and get an insurance quote on any home near a creek.
  • Drive your commute at rush hour. I-24 can turn a 45-minute trip into a much longer one.
  • Read the HOA rules. Many newer subdivisions have them.
