Nissan started building vehicles in Smyrna in June 1983, and that plant still shapes the town more than four decades later. Smyrna has grown into a Rutherford County city of an estimated 63,321 people as of July 2025, up from 53,070 in the 2020 Census, per the Tennessee State Data Center. Buyers come for the jobs, the lake, and a quick run up I-24 to Nashville. This guide covers the good, the hard parts, and the numbers we checked on November 5, 2026.

Here's what we'll cover:
The Nissan plant covers 6 million square feet on 884 acres and employs about 6,550 people, per a Nissan fact sheet dated May 2026. It can build 640,000 vehicles a year, including the Rogue, Pathfinder, Murano, and INFINITI QX60. Production of the new INFINITI QX65 started there on April 16, 2026. A plant that size keeps suppliers, restaurants, and service businesses busy all over town.
Rutherford County reappraised for 2026, and both rates came down. The county commission adopted $1.4885 per $100 of assessed value on June 22, 2026, down from $1.8762, per the county's announcement. The Town of Smyrna adopted $0.4258 on June 25, 2026, down from $0.5257, in Ordinance 26-27. Homes are assessed at 25% of appraised value, so a $400,000 home inside town limits pays about $1,914 a year, by our math on those published rates. Higher appraisals can offset a lower rate, so check your own bill with the Rutherford County Trustee.
Nashville International Airport is about 26 minutes from Smyrna Town Hall in light traffic, per OSRM routing on November 5, 2026. Frequent flyers get an easy airport run without paying Nashville prices. Smyrna also has its own general aviation field, Smyrna Airport (MQY), on the old Sewart Air Force Base, which also houses a Tennessee Army National Guard aviation facility.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers map of J. Percy Priest Lake shows Smyrna and the Smyrna Greenway right at the lake's southern reach. Fate Sanders Marina is about 15 minutes from Town Hall, and Lee Victory Recreation Park is about 6 minutes away. Weekend boating, fishing, and greenway walks stay close to home.
