So you're moving to Farragut. Congratulations! This West Knox County town sits along I-40 and Kingston Pike, about 17 miles west of downtown Knoxville, and it's one of the most popular landing spots in East Tennessee.
If you're still deciding, start with our pros and cons of living in Farragut. This guide is the practical part: utilities, school enrollment, your license and tags, taxes, and how to shop for homes for sale in Farragut without surprises.
Here's what we'll cover:
The Town's New Resident Checklist is a handy starting point. Here's our version, in the order most folks need it:
Each fall, the Town also runs an Introduction to Farragut program for new residents. Call Town Hall at (865) 966-7057 for dates.
Utilities here come from several providers, and none of them is the Town itself. Line these up a week or two before you move.
The Town of Farragut does not provide garbage or recycling pickup. Your HOA may contract a hauler, so ask first. If not, the Town lists private haulers including Waste Connections (865-522-8161) and Ward Waste Solutions (865-805-7896). Knox County also runs recycling drop-off centers.
This one surprises a lot of newcomers. Fire service in Farragut comes from Rural Metro Fire, and it works by subscription. Rural Metro says the membership price is based on your home's square footage, coverage starts the day after you enroll, and it isn't retroactive. Homes without a membership get billed for any fire response. Call Rural Metro at (800) 624-5835 to check your address or sign up the week you close.
Farragut is served by Knox County Schools, and four campuses sit in town: Farragut Primary (K to 2), Farragut Intermediate (3 to 5), Farragut Middle (6 to 8), and Farragut High (9 to 12). Not every Farragut address is zoned to those schools, so check yours with the district's School Zone Search tool and confirm with the district. We never promise a school assignment.
Knox County Schools says new students enroll in person at the zoned school, and there's no online registration for new students. Bring a printed enrollment packet plus proof of birth, a Tennessee immunization certificate, a physical from the past year, and proof of residence such as a gas, water, or electric bill in the parent's name. The Office of Enrollment is at (865) 594-1502.

Tennessee gives new residents 30 days to get a Tennessee driver license and register their vehicles. First-time Tennessee licenses are handled at state Driver Services Centers, and the Town lists nearby options in Oak Ridge (475 Oak Ridge Turnpike), Alcoa, Strawberry Plains, and Knoxville on Gore Road.
For your car, the Knox County Clerk has an office on the first floor of Farragut Town Hall, 11408 Municipal Center Drive, open weekdays 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (865-966-5205). The Clerk asks for your out-of-state title (or lienholder information), your ID, and proof of Knox County residence. The Clerk lists $76 for a typical title and standard plate. Tennessee ended vehicle emissions testing in 2022, so there's no test to schedule.
Farragut has no Town property tax. You'll pay Knox County only, and the Knox County Commission adopted a 2026 rate of $1.0158 per $100 of assessed value on August 31, 2026. Homes are assessed at 25% of appraised value, so a $739,000 home pays about $1,877 a year. The Knox County Property Assessor lists these dates:

Farragut is one of the pricier towns around Knoxville, and the numbers show it. Redfin put the median sale price at about $739,000 for the three months ending September 2026, up 2.3% from a year earlier, at $272 per square foot. Homes sold in a median of 53 days, at 98.1% of list price, and 29.4% had a price drop. Census estimates put the median value of owner-occupied homes at $583,400 (ACS 2020 to 2024), with 84.7% of homes owner-occupied.
Other costs help balance it out. Tennessee doesn't tax wages, and the county-only property tax keeps the yearly bill lower than in many Nashville suburbs. Check your budget with our home affordability calculator before you tour.
Farragut's homes span about five decades. Today's active listings run from a 1977 home on Lost Tree Lane to builds finished in 2026, per flexmls. A few areas to know:
